In the begining: On Thursday, August 6, 1998, DOW Stereo Electronics Clairmont store in San Diego, CA started selling the first commercially available HDTV sets. It is a Panasonic 56-inch rear projection model. Its list price is $5499. (with free local delivery! :) At the same event, Unity Motion announced that they will start broadcasting HDTV over a satellite channel 24 hours per day. Their converter box costs about $1500. At the start of 2002, there are many larger rear-projection HDTVs from which to choose. Mitsubishi's 65" WS-65819 for $2999, Sony's 57" KP57HW40 for $2999, Panasonic's Rear Projection monitors from $1999... NBC to present 2002 Olympic Winter Games from Salt Lake City in HDTV. JVC dicsussed their developments with D-VHS. Matsushita announced their development of a 50 GB Blue Laser Rewriteable Dual-layer Optical Disc that can lead to DVDs that hold 4 hours of HDTV. Sony and Pioneer have demonstrated a HD-DVD prototype.
